Kubernetes for Beginners

Last year the Weaveworks team led Kubernetes and GitOps workshops all over Europe and North America. As we continue to assist more and more customers with their on-premise, public cloud and hybrid deployments we evolve and hone our workshop course materials to meet the practical demands of running Kubernetes in production. Are you curious about what it’s like to take a Weaveworks workshop and what you’re going to get out of one if you sign up? If so, then read on.

How we run our workshops

Since all of our classes centre around a real application running in a cluster, we ask that attendees have a good overview of Kubernetes. These are not for total beginners, (although we can arrange those as well). Our instructor-led hands-on workshops are taught by practitioners like Brice Fernandes, who is also ‘in the field’’ assisting customers with their digital transformations. In other words, you will gain first-hand knowledge from engineers who are implementing and maintaining Kubernetes using the GitOps model today.

We typically start the workshop with a description of what it means to be production ready. Then, we supply you with a practical production ready checklist that you can use for your own Kubernetes implementations. You’ll spend the rest of the class drilling down on the different topics on that list, learning how to configure, manage and monitor a production ready application running in Kubernetes. A light lunch with refreshment breaks in between provide you with plenty of time to chat with your peers and to ask the Weaveworks engineers any questions you might have.

A typical agenda:

  • Welcome & introduction
  • Getting started with your environment
  • What is “Production Ready” (cluster & app checklist)
  • Monitoring a production cluster (Prometheus & Observability)
  • Building for observability (HPA, Istio Canary, FluentD & Prometheus)
  • Declarative infrastructure in practice (GitOps model, Infra as code)
  • DevOps and GitOps in practice (CI/CD pipelines, compliance tracking)
  • Advanced Deployment Patterns (Canary, Blue/Green, A/B testing)
  • Security best practices (RBAC, Kubernetes security groups, network policies)
  • Node management and Kubernetes upgrade
  • Light breakfast, lunch and refreshments will be provided.

Here’s a previously recorded workshop that will give you a good idea of how our workshops are run:

Workshop: Your Path to Production Ready Kubernetes - London, UK

If you’re in London this May, join us for a full day, hands-on instructor-led Kubernetes workshop.

Date: Wed, May 8, 2019

Time: 8:30 AM – 5:00 PM BST

Location: CodeNode - London, United Kingdom

Registration Fees: 175 GBP

Accelerate your journey to production ready Kubernetes with practical techniques for reliably operating your software lifecycle using the GitOps model. The Weaveworks team is running a full-day workshop, and will be sharing their expertise as users and contributors of Kubernetes and Prometheus, as well as practitioners of GitOps (operations by pull request) practices:

  • Developing and operating your Kubernetes microservices at scale
  • What does DevOps and GitOps look like in practice
  • Building with Kubernetes in production: caring for your apps, implementing CI/CD best practices, and utilizing the right metrics, monitoring tools, and automated alerts
  • Operating Kubernetes in production: Upgrading and managing Kubernetes, managing incident response, and adhering to security best practices for Kubernetes

This workshop may be for you, if:

  • You are a cluster operators/ administrators or DevOps engineers. We expect at working knowledge of Kubernetes - this course will not cover Kubernetes basics.
  • You have deployed a few applications to a test cluster, and now want a path forward of how to use Kubernetes in production - reliably and at scale.
  • Your current pipeline and workflows are not bulletproof just yet and you are looking for tips and tricks to make operations smoother.
  • Please bring a laptop with a recent browser and wifi as we will cover hands-on sessions in a sandbox environment.

This workshop doesn't cover:

  • Deep knowledge of the Prometheus Query Language. We’ll be working through practical examples, but we don’t cover the rest of PromQL.
  • Kubernetes Introduction and concepts.
  • We won’t be going through an overview of Kubernetes, instead we focus on application in the real world.

Workshop at Kubecon Europe (Barcelona): Your Path to a Production Ready Kubernetes

Are you going to Kubecon in Barcelona? If you are be sure to sign up for our popular workshop, Your Path to a Production Ready Kubernetes.

Date: Monday 20 May

Time: 9:00 – 17:00

Location: Fira Gran Via

Registration Fees: 175€

Using a combination of instructor-led demonstrations and hands-on exercises, the workshop will enable attendees to go into detail on the following topics:

  • Developing and operating your Kubernetes microservices at scale
  • DevOps best practices and the movement towards a “GitOps” approach
  • Building with Kubernetes in production: caring for your apps, implementing CI/CD best practices, and utilizing the right metrics, monitoring tools, and automated alerts
  • Operating Kubernetes in production: Upgrading and managing Kubernetes, managing incident response, and adhering to security best practices for Kubernetes

Prerequisites:

  • Basic knowledge of Kubernetes is required. At a minimum practical experience experimenting with Kubernetes is required
  • You have deployed a few applications to a test cluster, and now want a path forward on how to use Kubernetes in production
  • Familiarity with the Unix command line
  • A complete cloud lab environment will be provided, so bring your laptop with an up to date browser

This workshop doesn’t cover:

  • Deep knowledge of the Prometheus Query Language. We’ll be working through practical examples, but won’t cover the rest of PromQL
  • Kubernetes Introduction and concepts. We won’t be going through an overview of Kubernetes, instead we focus on application in the real world.
  • Light breakfast, Lunch and refreshments will be provided.

Please note you must be registered to attend KubeCon + CloudNativeCon Europe 2019 in Barcelona in order to attend this workshop.
