Meet the team: Damien Lespiau (Software Engineer)
Next up on our roster is Damien Lespiau, Software Engineer who is helping define what the future of containers looks like at Weaveworks and (according to him) has spent way too much time playing with Linux over the past 20 years. You can find him exploring “The Untapped Power of Services - L7 Load Balancing Without a Service Mesh” at his talk at KubeCon Europe this year.

We’re keeping the ball rolling on our “Meet the team” blog series to show off our stellar team here at Weaveworks.

Five Questions for Damien Lespiau
What does a typical day look like for you and what are you currently working on?
I sit behind a screen, typing things on a keyboard. It gets really exciting sometimes when I get up to close the blinds or get coffee.
I'm working on better introspection for Kubernetes workloads: once things are deployed on a cluster, and what information we can present to the user automatically. For instance if you deploy a Go micro-service, you'll get a lot of details about the Go runtime: the evolution of the number of goroutines in time, garbage collection statistics, allocations ...
Any words of advice for others trying to learn about containers and Kubernetes?
It really depends on previous knowledge and how one likes to learn. There are great talks on youtube, I'd definitely check the ones from Martin Fowler and Kelsey Hightower! Once the main concepts are integrated, I don't think there's a better way to continue learning than having a small project and trying to deploy it on Kubernetes using either minikube or GKE. There's a free tier to try GKE (https://cloud.google.com/free/). You can even use Weave Cloud for free with GKE!
What’s your top 3 Talks/Books?
- The Art of Computer Programming series is timeless classic!
- The Algorithmic Beauty of Plants made me discover what people call Creative Coding these days. I've been looking a lot at graphics things since then, can't get enough of it!
- I'm a big fantasy fan, currently reading the 14th and last book of The Wheel of Time, highly recommend!
What do you wish other people knew about Weaveworks?
The London office is in Shoreditch, the coolest part of the city!
Any favourite cool new technologies you’ve been looking at lately?
I have to say I'm quite excited by the promises of service meshes. It's still early days and a there's a lot of work ahead but they may become a vital part of Kubernetes clusters in the next few years.
