After six years of service we are sad to announce that Weave Cloud will be shut down on the 30th September 2022. All subscribers will receive three months of free service (July 1st, 2022 - September 30th, 2022) to thank you for using the platform over its lifetime. If you have questions or need help please contact the support team who will be happy to help.
As a bit of history Weave Cloud was created in 2015 with the mission to simplify deployment, understanding and managing containerized applications for DevOps teams. If you’ve ever watched a DevOps engineer deploy a new version and check that the deployment went well, you’ll have seen the multiple systems and general complexity of this. While containers bring many benefits, the distributed architecture and overall management can be very complex. To solve that problem we brought together continuous deployment (Flux), visualization (Scope) and monitoring/notebooks (Cortex | Prometheus) in one console:
Over the last seven years we’ve seen customers adopt Weave Cloud and use it to deploy and operate all sorts of different applications.
A big change to our initial hypothesis has been the rise of Kubernetes as the standard container orchestrator: this really standardized the environment containers are run within. The biggest element of our hypothesis that hasn’t proven out is that teams need a single DevOps management tool: what we’ve often found is that teams used one element but didn’t take advantage of the benefits of joining all three elements together.
In part, this is because teams often have existing investments in one area or another and the cost of change was too high to fully adopt the platform. And, overall we didn’t convince teams of the value of one single management console spanning all three areas.
The element that users loved the most has been deployment and operations with GitOps. The idea of having the whole of your stack - from Kubernetes up through services and applications - all using a single “as-code” approach has always had a strong response. That overwhelmingly positive user feedback led us to investing into GitOps: enabling teams to build and manage their entire application platform using git as the single source of truth.
Weave GitOps, our continuous delivery and operations platform, is a response to the following key questions of enterprises investing into cloud native:
How can we provide a homogenous platform experience on top of any Kubernetes?
How can we increase development speed and deployment reliability for applications running on top of that platform?
How can we strengthen security for high performance teams and the underlying platform?
I’d like to thank everyone who’s been a trialist, customer and supporter of Weave Cloud. Many of the technologies are open source and Weaveworks donated two (Flux and Cortex) to the CNCF so they live on as community projects. If you have questions or need help migrating from Weave Cloud our support team is happy to help.
